Madison River below Hebgen Lake
Many anglers think that the Madison is a freestone stream. Much of it is (mainly the section located in
the Yellowstone National Park) but the majority of the river is in fact a tailwater. This section is not far
below Hebgen Lake. One good thing about the tailwater section of the river is that the fluctuations in
the water heights and releases vary little compared to many tailwater streams. Even though the
Madison has had its problems during the past several years (whirling disease for one), it is still one of
the best, and many may argue, the very best trout stream in the World.
